Husky Nurse Precepting reflects the University of Washington’s commitment to practice-based nursing education and strong clinical and community partnerships. Preceptors support nursing students by providing guided, real-world learning experiences that strengthen clinical readiness, professional judgment, leadership, and confidence.

Preceptors are part of a broader health sciences education community that values collaboration across disciplines and care settings. Through mentorship and shared teaching, Husky Nurse Preceptors contribute to interprofessional learning and enduring partnerships across the Washington state healthcare landscape and beyond.

Precepting supports sustainable clinical and community education for undergraduate and advanced practice nursing students while also benefiting clinical partners through workforce development, mentorship, and long-term recruitment and retention.

Preceptor Information

Accessible Accordion

  • Hold an active, unencumbered license in the area of practice appropriate for the student learning objectives
  • Have at least of one (1) year of of clinical or practice experience as a licensed nurse at or above the level for which the student is preparing

  • Maintain active licensure and professional standing consistent with regulatory and organizational requirements
  • Provide appropriate clinical supervision and ensure patient safety throughout the experience
  • Provide an orientation to the clinical setting to support a smooth transition and effective learning
  • Model professional, ethical, and evidence-based nursing practice
  • Support students’ progressive participation in care consistent with their level of preparation and scope
  • Observe student performance in areas such as clinical reasoning, communication, documentation, and interprofessional collaboration
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback and complete required UW School of Nursing evaluations accurately and objectively
  • Communicate promptly with UW School of Nursing faculty and staff regarding student performance, professionalism, concerns, or safety issues
  • Contribute to a respectful, inclusive clinical learning environment that supports high-quality patient care
  • Husky Nurse Preceptors are not expected to determine a student’s final course grade or academic standing, independently manage significant student performance, professionalism, or safety concerns, or navigate concerns without support: UW School of Nursing faculty and staff remain actively involved and serve as a resource throughout the clinical experience
